Hello and welcome back to another episode of “The Freight Project Podcast!”

On today’s episode we welcome back the Cerasis Freight Desk Manager, Chris Longner, to speak about what his department is up to now and how Chris was able to come into Cerasis 4 years ago and help the freight desk scale by levering technology, metrics, and good communication. Chris lays out how a shipper could mirror what Chris did to scale during explosive growth at Cerasis to leverage freight resources more effectively and aid, without a missed step, our customers in achieving their goals.

How to Scale & Leverage Freight Resources

In this episode Chris and Cerasis’ Marketing Manager & “The Freight Project Podcast” host, Adam Robinson, will go through a set of questions on how shippers can mirror what Chris did to leverage freight resources, namely people, more effectively to reduce costs and stabilize freight operations.

In this “The Freight Project Podcast” episode you’ll hear Chris answer the following:

  • As Freight Desk Manager, can you describe in total what your department does for our customers?
  • Can you describe the environment of the freight desk when you came in and then what vision or strategy you employed?
  • Beyond strategy, what did you then need to leverage in order to execute that strategy? Often it takes getting buy in from leadership. How did they support you and how did Chris effectively justify changes & other investments, tools, or even more bodies to pull off the vision?
  • Beyond getting leadership buy in, how did Chris take existing staff who had been here in different ways of thinking and visions, and at a smaller company size than where we are now, get them to adopt the vision and make that change as Chris alone cannot be the one that implements the strategy and sees that scale he wants to see?
  • One of the things Chris did to drive home his vision and the scale he desired for the department, was the metrics Chris gathered. What kinds of metrics did Chris track and why is it key to go over these with his people?
  • If you were to have a meeting with a freight manager today, what would be the first questions you ask them to understand their practice better and what would be your one piece of advice to get them started to work on leveraging resources better and implementing their own visions of scale so that they may have better overall operations for freight that then provide so many benefits for the company at large?
