This is the third of our four main categories we write about on the Cerasis blog. Those 4 main categories center around Manufacturing, Freight, Logistics, and Supply Chain. Each category also has many sub categories, which you can view if you navigate to the drop down menu on the right of this blog post about halfway down. We have also written many special series which I encourage you to read for a more focused education.

If you are a regular reader, or even a one time reader, on the Cerasis blog, you will notice that we are not actually a manufacturer, but a service provider in the way of freight and transportation management as a third party logistics services provider. We write extensively and read about the state of manufacturing so we can educate our manufacturer shippers as well as understand what they are going through as an industry to best support them. We've written about Reshoring, the Manufacturing PMI, the Skills Gap, process improvement, and more. 5 Top Manufacturing Blogs of 2014 so Far

Today, however, we do want to give you a quick look at which top manufacturing blogs our readers have read that were published in the first half of 2014 and have the most page views in the first half of the year. The posts are quite diverse in subject matter, covering of course Reshoring, the costs of manufacturing in America vs. China, the tranformation of manufacturing, and also an important subject: safety.

So without further ado, here are the 5 Top manufacturing blogs from the first half of 2014 so far.

#1: The Reshoring (and Logistics) Debate: Mexico Vs China Manufacturing, Who Has the Upper Hand Now?

There are many reports about the reshoring movement and how many manufacturers are moving plants back from when they off-shored to China in the 80s and 90s back to US soil. However, we are also seeing a rise in companies moving from China to Mexico, for many reasons. Recently Cerasis asked in the Manufacturing Leadership Community group on LinkedIn, run by Manufacturing Executive:

#2: [Infographic] US Manufacturing Only 5 Percent More Costly Than China, Strengthens Case for Reshoring

Five economies traditionally regarded as low-cost manufacturing bases China, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Russia have seen their cost advantages erode significantly since 2004 while US Manufacturing has considerably improved its cost structure, according to a new study. The erosion in the cost advantage has been driven by a confluence of sharp wage increases, lagging productivity growth, unfavorable currency swings, and a dramatic rise in energy costs, states the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) based on a study of 25 nations that account for nearly 90 percent of global exports of manufactured goods.

#3: The Rise of Distributed Manufacturing and 7 Advantages over Traditional Manufacturing

As the world becomes a more global economy, and as the United States sees a recovery in manufacturing, we must not get complacent For continued growth we must continually disrupt ourselves and keep a mindset of innovation. This morning I was having a conversation with a co worker on how to better position the messaging of the “WHY” customers use our services. Our approach at Cerasis is to create innovative logistics solutions for our customers, and my coworker stated a good quote by Wayne Dyer:

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

To continue growth, in the manufacturing industry and in business in general, traditional models need to be examined and innovation must happen as you look at a different way of doing things. The conversation was VERY timely as I was researching a new approach to manufacturing, distributed manufacturing.

Some of the lucky college grads already have jobs lined up or at least a clear path for their next move. That’s great! But for plenty of others, the end of college means moving back home, often with a load of student debt and no solid career prospects on the horizon.  There are also plenty of high school students (and their parents) doing a whole lot of number crunching, wondering how they’ll ever afford four years at a major university.
